Gray cast iron has a light gray fracture, so it is called gray cast iron (gray iron). Due to its low price and wide application, gray cast iron accounts for more than 80% of the total output of cast iron.
Gray cast iron has low cost, low price and wide application. It is mainly used in machine tool bed, gear box, pulley, base, cylinder body, cover, hand wheel and other parts with low force, wear resistance and shock absorption.
Gray cast iron has a certain strength, but its plasticity and toughness are very low. This performance characteristic is related to the performance of graphite itself and its existence form in the cast iron structure. It has good shock absorption. When gray cast iron is used to make parts such as bases or frames on machinery and equipment, it can effectively absorb the energy of machine vibration; it has good lubrication performance; it also has good thermal conductivity, because graphite is a good conductor of heat; in addition, it is relatively convenient to melt and has good casting performance. It has good flow performance, small linear shrinkage and volume shrinkage, and the casting is not easy to crack. Therefore, it is suitable for casting castings with complex structures and thin-walled castings, such as automobile cylinder blocks and cylinder heads.
According to the Chinese national standard (GB9439-88), the grades of grey cast iron are divided into six grades according to the tensile strength of a single cast φ30mm test bar, namely HT100, HT150, HT200, HT250, HT300, HT350.
